Average Weekly Consumption

If this is an average individual in the US, TV is definitely dead. At least the traditional approach to watching TV. I was driving to work the other day and heard this interesting interview with the Author of “The Facebook Effect” on NPR. Author David Kirkpatrick talked about Mark’s assertion that people are being dishonest to themselves when they have different personalities portrayed in different settings. Here is the quote from David/NPR report (link to NPR article)

He sees the world as moving very rapidly toward transparency and very rapid sharing of data between individuals in all sorts of ways, on and off Facebook,” Kirkpatrick says. “And from the day he first created his system, he had this ethos of sharing that he strongly believed in

For Zuckerberg, that ethos means sharing everything. He disagrees with the notion that people have different identities. To him, the idea that someone is different at work than at home, than at a rock concert, is dishonest. Says Kirkpatrick, “He believes that he will live a better life personally, and all of us will be more honest, and ultimately it will be better for the world if we dispense with that belief.”

I think Mark Zuckerberg is WRONG! I have one personality with many traits and I CHOOSE to bring out certain traits depending on what the occasion calls for. I am still being MYSELF, but I see nothing wrong in behaving differently as long as I am true to my conscience. I like Facebook and it has helped me keep in touch with my family/friends without having to do a 1:1 email conversation. But I REFUSE to mix my work colleagues with my family/friends simply because I know that mixture will not work well. I think Mark needs to understand that there are a lot of loyal users of Facebook who probably share the same philosophy as I do and I hope he accepts that as an alternative to his views.
